Goodbye January (good riddance!)...

Due to major snow storms, ice storms, wind storms, power outages, refrigerator and furnace failures, and a car accident ("totaled" my poor Prius) I have not been able to sit down and write a good blog post. But, I am STILL STANDING! I will make up for lack of posts soon! I took time this weekend to be thankful for my life, family and friends. I walked in the sunshine, sifted sand through my fingers, felt warmth on my cheeks, slid on two "slats" in the snow, and called every one of my dear friends and family members. This is what life truly is...little "wake-up calls" that kinda add up to one big "yell" from the Universe.

Thanks for your infinite patience! I do have so much to share for the coming year...

Studio time today!

Just climbed "down" from my loft studio after six hours of standing and creating. Feeling a bit out of "shape" creating for this long of a span. Sitting does not appeal to my creative juices. I'm working with this photo today, one I took with a Holga camera. I love the larger, square format of the Holga, with it's funky fuzzy edges. It's going to look interesting with encaustic wax...

What are YOUR favorite three art supplies? (mine: my photos, clear encaustic wax and oil pastels, with cheescloth as a close fourth).

A NEW piece! I managed to create this one during the "madness" of the Holidays. Sometimes, things just pop out from "nowhere". It's the first in my "Fort Worden Series", called "Bunker Wall, #1" featuring, of course, two of my most favorite mediums: rust and wax!!

I NEVER imagined this would happen. Over 10,000 visits to this humble blog since I started it in early 2009. What a wonderful way to end 2011. I promise new and exciting content for 2012. This "adventure" called Life and Art will never end! Thank you for stopping by over the years...

Today, I had the opportunity to catch up with a dear "art" friend. We shared food, travel stories, "tech" stories and angst (we both acquired new, exciting, frustrating tech toys this year). We shopped "half off" Christmas sales, photographed and sketched at a favorite plant nursery.

Cherish your friendships! Simplify! Those are my mottos for 2012.

I am SO excited about my upcoming encaustic basics class due to start tomorrow on 11/11/11! I will be teaching it at the gorgeous NEW
Schack Art Center, located in downtown Everett, Washington. My class is full, and so is the amount of material we will cover. I think we will gear some encaustic collages toward this special date that will never take place again in our lifetimes! Here's to prime numbers and one's. (11/11/11 is also a "triple prime" equaling 33---is it not?!). 3 has always been my lucky number...I think great things are going to take place in this class!

11/11/11 Post "note": Sorry! 11/11/11 is NOT a triple prime...but it is a numerical palindrome AND a "repunit"... (love how that word just rolls off the tongue).

Some of my favorite "Dia de Los Muertos" (Day of the Dead) images from Oaxaca, Mexico and celebrations here in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. This holiday is truly a joyful celebration of deceased loved ones' lives, and I love everything about it. Wish I were in Mexico to witness this truly magical holiday...(miss the "killer" mezcal too, they sure know how to make it in Oaxaca).

Art in the works...encaustic and mixed media.

I had the privilege of participating in the Edmonds Art Studio Tour at Lynn Scott Studio, September 17 and 18. We enjoyed varied weather (sun, rain, clouds) and LOTS of interested visitors. Lynn's entire house was filled with beautiful art, both upstairs and down! I demonstrated encaustic technique for most of the weekend, while gazing at the beautiful Puget Sound and Whidbey Island (through the studio window). What a treat!

There is A-R-T happening in my studio, in "fits and start" due to work and family obligations, but at least something is taking place! Shown above, I am experimenting with encaustic and mixed media (Pieces of Love and Happiness).

My partner, David, and I (and Chai the Bishon) recently went on a camping trip to Eastern Washington, to a beautiful lake near the small town of Winthrop. We were able to enjoy 80 degree weather, gorgeous "high and dry" views of desert, rolling hills and mountains. We had an abundance of quality sketching and reading time. We even caught a few trout! Chai had a wonderful time chasing ducks and fish, but kept "forgetting" how to swim...David even did some landscape sketching with me, under that beautiful tree by the lake.

But, in all this beauty, there is sadness this month. Chai (the Bishon) passed away on October 8. We are so thankful that we had one last camping trip together before she left this earth. I hope that she is chasing ducks and enjoying naps, wherever she is now...

Edmonds Art Studio Tour is coming this weekend!

This art assemblage piece that I just completed is ready to "debut" at the Edmonds Art Studio Tour, taking place this weekend, September 17 & 18, from 10-5! I will be showing at Lynn Scott Studio (#3 on the Tour map, see link below) along with Lynn Scott, Tracy Kay Fraker and Robin Westbrook. When you arrive, you will see some amazing artwork! We will be showing acrylic and mixed media paintings, encaustic paintings, collage, assemblage, photography and hand-beaded jewelry. We will also be demonstrating various art techniques throughout the weekend. Edmonds is located approximately 30 minutes north of Seattle, and there is plenty to do (and taste there) this weekend. Various versions of a theme...

I am currently working on an assemblage piece with the theme of "By Definition", dealing with thoughts and issues surrounding womanhood, life, death, aging...It's been a joy to be working on this piece over the last three weeks, after coming through a very hectic time at my new job, coordinating classes for the Schack Art Center in Everett, Washington.

I am using encaustic with paper mache torsos and dried rose buds, a "found" vintage trunk shelf, wire, quail eggs and other found objects. It has been a fascinating journey, and the piece "shape-shifts" every day. The mechanics of putting this piece together have been a real challenge! At one point, I was hanging shellac-dipped quail eggs from tree branches in my back yard, tending to the their "drying" process like any good mother hen might do.

I am hoping to finish this in time to enter into the National Collage Society's online juried show. What's next? Attaching the other two remaining torsos, and arranging the "veil"...it will be a two-person job for this task!

I apologize that I have not posted for quite some time! April and May were "whirlwind months" full of art workshops, a NEW job, a major computer "crash", and family activities. To begin with, ArtFest 2011, held in Port Townsend Washington, was FABULOUS! I took three wonderful mixed classes from Lynne Perrella, Michael deMeng (see my "female power" assemblage below) and Lisa Bebi. The weather was pretty darn nice and the views of the Puget Sound were gorgeous. I met so many wonderful and inspiring people, which is what ArtFest is all about.

My biggest news is that I am now gainfully employed by a wonderful organization called The Schack Art Center (formerly Arts Council of Snohomish County). The organization's building is a beautiful new 6 million dollar art center that just opened in Everett, Washington. It is complete with a hot shop (for glass-blowing), kiln and flamework studios (for glass), multi-purpose classrooms and lovely gallery space. I was hired intially to work in the gallery shop as a sales associate, then quickly moved into the art class coordinator position. I am so proud and excited to be working with these wonderful people that I have known since the mid 1990's. They are very dedicated to promoting the visual arts (and artists) of Snohomish County. I am now working on steadily building up a schedule of art classes for fall 2011, and it's so exciting!

In the midst of all of this, my daughter transferred to Western Washington University, and has declared her major for fall, Graphic Design. I could not be more proud of her. She is looking forward to her fall line-up of classes, and in the meantime, will probably be working at Yosemite National Park in California for the summer. Way to go girl!

David and I (and Chai the Bishon) were able to "sneak" away to Fort Ebey State Park on Whidbey Island in April (pictured above). What a gorgeous, rugged place that is...complete with bald eagles, para-gliders, wind. rain, sunsets, sweeping views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. We enjoyed lots of gin rummy and good eats, too.

AND, I am thrilled to announce that the online auction to benefit the Street Children of Oaxaca is ABOUT TO BEGIN. Check back here on June 1 to get the link to PREVIEW a wonderful line-up of artful, contemporary shrines that will be auctioned off for a great cause. That's all for now...

My shrine for the auction to benefit the street children of Oaxaca this year, "Illumination". It reflects my feelings about the raw and aged beauty of Oaxaca, Mexico, and the people of Oaxaca's ability to "rise" above the challenges of life there (thus the word "Ascension" and the dragonfly imagery on the inside of the cigar box). The shrine inside of the cigar box is actually made from an old clipboard, and I have added various found objects such as tin milagros, a ceramic Madonna and painted silk flowers.

This incredible online auction, started by Rebecca Brooks and due to start in early May, will feature a treasure trove of handmade shrines by many talented and caring artists who have found their way to this cause through the creative blogging community.

The NEW Schack Art Center is opening this weekend!

Grand Opening Weekend!

Celebrate the Grand Opening of the new Schack Art Center in downtown Everett on April 30th and May 1st.The Schack Art Center Grand Opening, sponsored by Kia, will be filled with artist demonstrations, facility tours, and the opportunity to win an introductory glass blowing class OR youth art camp.

The weekend will also include the opening reception for The Nature of Glass exhibit curated by Traver Gallery on Saturday evening from 4-7pm. This inaugural exhibit will features works by preeminent international glass artists including Dale Chihuly, Randy Walker, Dante Marioni, Karen Willenbrink-Johnson, Jane Rosen, Shelly Muzylowski-Allen, Steffen Dam and Preston Singletary, among others.

Progression of an idea. This encaustic painting is about the "primordial and spiritual" experience of being female. The handwritten quote "underneath" the wax is an excerpt from "The Thunder, Perfect Mind", taken from the Nag Hammadi Library (The Gnostic Society Library). Fascinating reading, by the way.

The quote starts out with "I was sent forth from the power..." According to expert Elaine Pagels, it was "...spoken in the voice of a feminine divine power."

The power of raw nature...

I just returned from my second trip to the Washington Pacific coast and Cape Disappointment State Park. My second trip in six weeks, mind you. And, it's ANYTHING but "disappointing"! I cannot begin to describe the RAW power of this place, once a "stomping" ground (although temporarily) for the famous Northwest explorers, Lewis and Clark.

One need not walk very far from the campground to be immersed in raw and powerful natural elements, including (but not limited to): powerful surf, rocky cliffs, lighthouses, shipwrecks, awesome sunsets, swampland, evergreen and birch forests, the sound of bald eagles from above...I could go on and on. This is what recharges my batteries as an artist, mother and human being...

This gorgeous photo was taken by my "significant other", David. Great job!

Dear Diary: I had the brilliant idea if "logging in" what I do with my time, to see where it all goes. Today, I promised myself a whole day of art-making, we'll see what happens...(Pacific Standard Time)

7:45 a.m. Took kid to Jazz Ensemble practice
8:15 a.m. Read paper, ate breakfast
8:45 a.m. Checked email and Facebook
9:33 a.m. Still wasting time on Facebook
9:35 a.m. Shower...
10:09 a.m. turned on encaustic wax and heating elements to LOW
10:10 a.m. off to license new (used) car for firstborn child, pick up a few groceries
11:17 a.m. "foiled" attempt to license car, needs emissions test. Just wasted over an hour of my time.

11:34 a.m. puttering around in studio, cleaning up and making room for another art project. I have 3 that I want to work on at the moment, about the state of being "female"...started one yesterday using encaustic wax on a "found" paper mache female form, using words from an old dictionary that define "femaleness"--some aren't so nice. Great fun to be working in 3D and wax! Picture to come...

12:22 p.m. glued paper to a gessoboard surface, pulled out sketches from a recent "Ladies OF THE lAKE" piece, hopped onto Facebook (DAMN!)

12:55 p.m. just off the phone with firstborn, catching up on the art we're currently working on (she's an art student in college)...time for lunch.

1:33 p.m. lunch is over, "Catcher in the Rye" is such a great read...back to work, the wax is waiting.

2:35 p.m. coating new boards with beeswax, fiddling with assemblage (pictured above)

4:15 p.m.   picked up second born at bus stop

4:35 p.m.   feeling exhausted, off to score a movie at Blockbuster, then back to the "wax" for a bit...

5:53 p.m. laid down a few layers f wax on a 24" board...unplugged for the day.

Happy Birthday Mom...you would have turned 80 last Sunday. So hard to believe. Did I ever get a chance to thank you for introducing me to the world of art as a young girl. I'll never forget our trips to Denver to see amazing works of art at the Denver Art Museum. I still remember attending opera, the ballet and the numerous plays you took me to. I'll never forget the first time I saw "The Hobbit" with you, and was gently, but firmly, pulled into the world of Tolkien. Oh, all those Saturday morning modern dance and art classes at the college. Those wonderful hikes through and up the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. 14,000 foot peaks! With you! I can only hope that I have done as well as you did, with my own two children (who you would have loved immensely). I understand now why Dad called you "Cheri" (not your real name of Marilyn), because this means "darling" in french. And you were exactly that...

Dear Diary: I have had enough! Enough holiday chatter to last me a lifetime. Enough already! (That's what my dog told me today while I was trying to get a good shot of her by the Christmas tree, in her new holiday sweater).

I am revisiting some photos of mine of a recent camping trip the the Washington coast, near the town of Ocean Shores. I can hear the surf, the birds, smell the brine, the damp, the muck...it's glorious!

Remember to stop, look and listen...

I wish everyone a very warm and peaceful and quiet holiday, whatever that holiday may be. Be grateful, be in the moment. Sit by a lake, or on a beach, or by a river....as a gift to yourself.

What a week. After spending Monday and Tuesday posting new "goodies in Etsy, I have turned "inward"– exploring new work involving Mom, and how her early death affected me. I'm thinking about this because I was recently asked to submit to a new publication that is "in the works". It involves answering some tough questions about my experiences as an "artist", and a request for some art that is inward-looking, personal. I have been skirting the issue for years, knowing full well that some day I would have to embrace Her, fully, in my art. I have felt her in the studio with me, as I peruse old photos of her. All I have left of her "life" are her old cookbook (her notations are in the margins, along with unknown bits of dried food), one of her art history books (complete with her handwritten lecture notes) and her photos from the 1950's, right before I was born. As I work on this particular piece, I seem to be having some heartfelt, silent conversations with her...feels good. Love you mom.

La Vida Artistica: The Artist's Life. My life. This week.

Dear Diary: the life of an artist is not easy. Lot's of ups and downs this week. A workshop that I very much wanted to teach, did not fill. Yet, I was asked to give a talk about encaustics at a local art guild meeting. What fun! Today, I get to work on ART all afternoon. Fantastic! Yesterday, I spent half the day updating my resume just in case that "perfect" part-time gig suddenly appears or drops into my lap. After 52 years on this earth, with a Bachelors degree in fine art, a successful 15+ years in the graphic design field, raising a family of two fabulous and creative children, and finding my way into one of the most desireable paths a person could choose (making and teaching art): I somehow feel inadequate. Updating resumes and applying for jobs can do that to a person.

But, my heart remains full, and sometimes, hopeful. That I am doing the right "thing", going against ALL logic, and pursuing this crazy career. That's all for now...

Miracles in Wax
Learn the basics of working with the exciting medium of encaustics while carving your own little “miracles” into warm beeswax. In Latin America, the milagro (“miracle”) is a small trinket that depicts a part of the body that is ailing a loved one. This can include images such as heads, hands, hearts, eyes and more. You will work on a milagro design of your own, then transfer the image to your encaustic surface. After carving the design, you will be able to experiment with color and texture using various mixed media, such as ink and powdered pigment. It was an AMAZING show opening for the Encaustics Art Show at North Seattle Community College Art Gallery last Tuesday. This truly is a show you do NOT want to miss! A huge "thank you" to Brenda and Wendy (pictured above) for the fabulous job they did with hanging the show, not an easy undertaking with SO many artists and art involved. It looks gorgeous! Hello fellow blogging friends. I do apologize for my wee absence from the blogging world. It's been a wild summer involving three shows, one workshop, a ten day road trip through the American West (and British Columbia), and getting one offspring settled in a new city and new college! But, I am glad to be back!

I have posted one 'teaser' photo from my road trip (on the back of a Harley, somewhere in Idaho) and a few "hands at work" from my recent workshop, "Warm Wax Collage". I want to thank all of my students, who graciously returned for the 2nd session after I had to call in sick. You were all wonderful students!

I can only view a few pages at a time, in order to savor each piece of "gorgeousness". Dear Dad, today would have been your 94th birthday! If you were still here you would have scolded me for saying this in public! I still dream of our fishing and camping trips together, backpacking trips and eating out of a peanut butter jar in the rain. I still wonder what happened to that string of 20 trout I dropped to the bottom of 11 Mile Reservoir in Colorado...still remember how you very patiently extracted that fish hook from my thumb, and sitting in the car during thunderstorms while our fishing lines were still in the water...the Cessna flight to Pueblo, Colorado, you flew with me, grinning at my strange shade of 'green' while winds buffeted us along the front range of the Rockies. I love you Dad.

Here is another sneak peek at new artwork I am showing in Edmonds, Washington, through the weekend of July 17th and 18th. "Maman" (encaustic with mixed media) is making her first appearance in public at ArtSplash, and "The Rodent Speaks" is speaking his point of view on things at the Fabric of Life Boutique. (see my sidebar for links to show hours and addresses).

There are also a few FUN events going on around town, like the free bluegrass concert happening on Sunday in Edmonds City Part at 3:00 p.m. Edmonds in Bloom, a gorgeous garden tour, is also taking place on Sunday from 11-4. And, there are always the beautiful beaches to visit!

I just recently returned from tropical Maui breezes, and had to plunge right in to the massive Artists Garage Sale, which took place in Everett, Washington this last weekend. It was a HUGE success, and "Thanks" to everyone who attended and stopped by my booth. A gorgeous 70 degree day, with full sunshine--which is rare in June in Washington!!

My shrine has arrived!!

This beautiful shrine,"Art Heals", has just arrived on my doorstep! It was made by artist Lisa DiNunzio, and you can see her blog at: www.pritistudio.blogspot.com. Lisa was one of many talented artists who participated in the auction to benefit Oaxaca Street Children Grassroots, which raised approximately $4,000 this year. I was also very privileged to be involved in the auction, by making and donating a handmade shrine called "Protect the Children". (see my sidebar)

Here is a little bit about Lisa DiNunzio:
"I am a self-taught (self-critical) artist. I was brought up by the
"waste not-want not" mantra, so this explains the up-cycled art
I create and also probably my extra 10 pounds :)
I am a paradox: eternally optimistic and at the same time

What the heck is happening here?

Now working on in the studio: I recently found an amazing drawing of "ah-hem", those 'cabaret-type' women, that I did in college! I'm am re-inventing them in encaustic wax. It's been so much fun, carving out buns and breasts in warm wax...no, really!

This is the first of a series of these pieces, based on the 4 elements: water, fire, earth, and air. This one is 'water'. This concept came to me while 'tubbing' at the Korean spa the other day, surrounded by all those fabulous female bodies, every shape imaginable! I was in 'water', looking up through 'air' and through the skylight, feeling more 'grounded' (earth) because of this experience, and was about to visit the hot sauna (fire) rooms. My 'educated' conclusion: women need to address the 4 elements–water, fire, earth, air–within themselves on a regular basis, in order to feel truly grounded.

It's finally here! In ONE week (APRIL 16), visit this blog to get the link to the LIVE ONLINE AUCTION site for the benefit auction for OAXACAN STREETCHILDREN GRASSROOTS. Rebecca Brooks is in her 2nd year of organizing and running this amazing charity benefit. You can see here blog, Recuerda Mi Corazon, here. Rebecca has posted some wonderful examples of the artwork, and a bit about the artists.

Pictured above is the shrine I have made and donated to this incredible cause. It is a tribute to the children of Oaxaca, and is truly art from "mi corazon". It is made from wood, encaustic wax, found objects, antique "Charlotte" dolls, silk flowers, antique nails and mica. Names of children (in Spanish) appear around the edge of the shrine. It measures 10 x 13 x 3". I am an truly honored to be a part of this amazing cause! Many other talented artists have also made and donated some amazing cigar box shrine artwork.

In the studio this week...

What's happening in the studio this week? I just finished another 5x5" encaustic milagro (miracle), soon to be offered in my etsy shop. I have used encaustic wax, india ink, oil pastel and a small tin heart milagro on this piece. Tin milagros are very popular in Mexico, and are used to pray for a loved one who is ill, or needs help with business, family, livestock, etc. I LOVE these!

I scored "The Owl's Nest" sign at Goodwill for $1.99! Now that's a miracle in itself! It will hang in my 2nd floor loft studio. I have recently become very 'hooked' on the show, "American Pickers". These guys finds some absolutely amazing stuff and meet the most eccentric, yet heartfelt people!!

Great way to jump start a 'dreaded' Monday...

They've come a long way, baby...

You gotta love these girls (no pun intended, hee-hee). As you can see, this piece has completely changed (see previous post). Yes, I love big, voluptuous, "real" female forms. I am really starting to have some fun with texture and negative space here! I have used sand from Maui, clear 'micro' glass beads and metallic rubs with encaustic wax. More progress to come! (It's still 'cooking').

Art in the works, great uses for old books...

I have been working on these two pieces (off and on) for the last two years. The top one is based on some photos I took of a maker of "barro negro" (black pottery) near Oaxaca, Mexico. Her name is Sofia, and at age 92, I do believe she is still at it! The center image is of a piece I am doing based on Venus fertility images. These unfinshed pieces haunt me. Just when they start to "progress", they come to a screeching HALT! I think I am just too concerned about the outcome. I should know better by now, NEVER be concerned about the outcome...art is all about the journey.

I just LOVE my collection of old and soon-to-be-discarded books. I have found another great use for them (other than altering them for journals and using parts of them in my assemblage pieces)–I use them to weigh down artwork I am gluing to backing boards, as I prepare them for framing. The wide array of uses for old books never ceases to amaze me...

What would we do without creative minds in the world?!

I have just finished this piece and posted it on Etsy. I recently sold two of these encaustic pieces, also using heart 'milagro' images. I 'm having a lot of fun creating these, and will soon be doing eyes, hands, mouths, and more! "Milagro" means "miracle" in Spanish, and you see many of these litttle tin 'body parts' throught Mexico and Latin America. The families use them to aid in their prayers for loved ones who are ill. I love the idea of creating these 'little miracles' in wax...

I have just posted all of my new Spring art workshops in the sidebar, with links for more information and registration. In April and May, I will be teaching BEESWAX COLLAGE: CELEBRATE SPRING (collage with warm beeswax), THE PAINTED PAGE: CELEBRATE MAY (free-form collage books), and CABINET OF CURIOSITIES (artistic assemblage).

These workshops all take place in the greater Seattle area. Get a friend to sign up with you, and make a weekend out of it! If you are coming from out of town, I can direct you to some wonderful places to visit in the Seattle area! April and May are GORGEOUS months to be here, and everything will be in bloom...
