JOIN ME FOR THIS FABULOUS 2-DAY WORKSHOP, FEBRUARY 12-13, 2018 IN PORTLAND, OREGON!
DYNAMIC SURFACES IN MIXED MEDIA AND PIGMENTED WAX
INSTRUCTOR: LISA JONESMOORE
Textures! Colors! Patterns & Shapes Abound!
Have you ever seen a pattern on a sidewalk or a weathered wall that stopped you in your tracks? Or, lines and patterns in beach sand that intrigued you? Employing the powers of “Vision & Touch” with mixed media and pigmented encaustic wax, you will learn how to interpret the beautiful, dynamic surfaces that surround you! Encaustic paint (pigmented beeswax) is used in a molten state, and is a VERY tactile medium. After you have learned the basics of working with encaustic, you will create at least 12 small “tacTILE” sample boards (approximately 4” or 5” square panels), using at least a dozen mixed media techniques. You may bring ideas/sketches/photos from favorite places that inspire you, as an option. For your final project, you may either assemble your beautiful “tacTILES” onto a larger substrate as a lovely texture “mosaic”, or continue to explore the wonderful surfaces that inspire you. Join me for TEXTURE IMMERSION and mixed media mania! ALL LEVELS are welcome!
You will learn the following techniques:

• Encaustic wax “basics” and safety
• Scribing into wax, wax accretion, “scraping back” layers
• Mixed media techniques (all compatible with wax): graphite/pigment/oil pastel “rubs”, impressions with found objects, embedding small objects, use of alcohol and water-based artist inks, mark-making and more!
• Texture techniques using the following: wax, molding paste, wall spackling, crackle paste, lace, cheesecloth, sand, eggshells, natural elements and more!
• Designing your own stencils for “pattern and shape” fun
• Shellac and wood glue “burns”, if time and space allow
• How to assemble your “tacTILE mosaic” art piece or “sample” book, if desired

Textures! Colors! Patterns and Shapes! These elements are everywhere, especially in the magnificent country of Mexico. Discover how to combine these rich “ingredients” to create beautiful works of art. Mexico is the land of intriguing old walls, windows, doors, signage and sidewalks. Crumbling, decaying flaking and rusting surfaces abound, combined with vibrant layers of colors and patterns.

Utilizing “photo-strolls”, sketching, mixed media and encaustic wax techniques, learn how to interpret the dynamic surfaces that surround you. We will employ “vision and touch” to create small “TacTILE” sample pieces, using at least a dozen mixed media/warm wax techniques. For your final project, you will design and assemble your beautiful pieces onto a larger substrate, or continue to explore the wonderful surfaces that inspire you, in the smaller format. All levels welcome! Beginner to experienced artists. Space is limited for this unique and beautiful art retreat in the heart of Puerto Vallarta.

* Included in the price:

Returning to Oaxaca, Mexico, in late October!

I am "beyond thrilled" to be returning to Oaxaca, Mexico, for Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the dead) festivities in late October. In addition, I will be participating in an intensive art workshop involving night photography, collage and assemblage. I have not been to Oaxaca since 2007, and I still remember the rich sights and sounds during this very moving and sacred Mexican holiday, which really celebrates the "life" of departed loved ones, rather than "death". It is truly a very special time to be in Mexico. I highly recommend this if you have not yet experienced this magnificent celebration.

Working "feverishly" on new work for my upcoming Seattle show, A Sense of Place: Imagined and Transformed

Opening December 1, during the First Thursday Seattle Art Walk, I will be showing new work, along with gallerist and artist Lynn Hanson, at Lynn Hanson Gallery in Pioneer Square. Lynn will be "bringing to life" her feelings and "imaginings" of Swedish culture and folk art, while I (of course!) will be putting forth my deep feelings about and "transformative interpretations"  of Mexico, her culture and people. The show will run through January, 2017. More details to follow!

A "sneak peek" at my new work for  "A Sense of Place", opening December 1 at Lynn Hanson Gallery. This piece is entitled "Cruciform, Angel and Coca Cola", encaustic, metal, found objects, 16x16".

My newest work, titled "Allie Belle as a Young Woman", encaustic, mixed media, assemblage. Currently part of the ICON show at Lynn Hanson Gallery in Seattle, WA, through September 24, 2016.

If you live in the Greater Seattle area, be sure to join me for the ONLY encaustic open studio session around! Held at ArtWorks, in Edmonds, WA. $35 for 4 hours of open studio time, and you bring your supplies and ideas! Dates in 2016: Fridays, October 7 and December 9, from 1-5 pm, (sessions are usually held the first Friday of the month, contact me to confirm as dates do change). Contact me to register: jonesmoorestudioart@gmail.com.

I hope to see you at one of my shows or encaustic open studios, or better yet, in Mexico for my "Vision Touch" workshop in April 2017!

Spring Cleaning in the Studio!

I am spring cleaning my encaustic studio and just uncovered these encaustic monotypes I printed a few months ago! I like where they are "going". I LOVE the cruciform shape, and will continue to explore this (and its various symbolic meanings) in the months to come, both in painting and printmaking.

I would like to reach out to you, my dedicated students, art lovers and art colleagues, about the possibility of a workshop I am considering offering in spring of 2017. It would be one week in length, with 5 days of instruction and/or "field trip" work, at the beautiful Hacienda Mosaico in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

You probably know by now about my passion for Mexico and its people, culture, color, textures and "soul". This would be your chance to see Mexico from a different point of view, involving all of the senses. We would be working, mostly, with the gorgeous textures and colors that Mexico has to offer, and interpret these through encaustic wax and mixed media. We will also work with photographs and wax (optional), encaustic monoprinting techniques and MANY painting & texture techniques. We would be using our eyes and hands to record the beauty of Mexico, through photo "strolls", sketching, writing and studio time. You would also learn about the basics of working with encaustic wax and mixed media. If you have experience with encaustic, then you can get to work right away!

The price would most likely range in about the $1800-$2000 (pp/double occupancy) range for  one week at Hacienda Mosaico (includes "welcome" reception & freshly-cooked breakfasts and lunches on the pool patio), 6 nights accommodation and 5 days of art instruction/studio time. Please let me know your thoughts, and I appreciate your input! Hacienda Mosaico's website is here (take a look-it is GORGEOUS)! Sam Leonard is a gracious host who is also an artist herself, and has been hosting successful art retreats for 12 years:

UPDATE: THIS WORKSHOP IS TAKING PLACE APRIL 23-29, 2017.  VISIT HACIENDA MOSAICO'S WEBSITE (LISTED ABOVE) TO REGISTER! SPACE IS LIMITED!

Thank you!

On the studio table!

I am continuing to work on hidden messages and layers of wax. This work in progress features a favorite poem of mine called "Peace" by Sara Teasdale. I have "written" the poem into several layers of wax using Saral transfer paper (wonderful product!), and have embedded a photo of the Madonna's  reflection I captured in Rome. Is it finished?  Time will tell.

Favorite images from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The beauty there...beyond words. I came back "home" feeling so FULL. But where is "home"? I'll be returning to San Miguel in October for further creative exploration!

Roadside Mary, near Loreto, Mexico, Lisa JonesMoore 2014

This humble shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe stands on a lonely stretch of highway north of Loreto, Mexico and very is near the Bahia Concepcion (Bay of Conception). Bahia Concepcion os one of the most beautiful, rugged places on earth. The Virgin's simple beauty is stunning, and the offerings humble. Tonight is the Feast of the Virgin, celebrated throughout Mexico. I have such warm, loving memories of the people of San Miguel de Allende on this night-and especially of Susie, who opened her home, and heart, to us.

MANY THANKS to Rebecca Brooks for her challenge, 12 Days of the Virgin, it has been such a pleasure to revisit my Mexico images and memories, and to see what others are posting! Please visit Recuerda Mi Corazon for for "Mary Love".
