Some of my students' work from my Candy Tin Assemblage class that took place last night. These photos show various stages of progress throughout the evening. My students were mostly teachers (middle and high school), and artists. I felt like I was in very good company. Teaching this class was a very rewarding experience!

On Wednesday, July 22, I will be teaching a 3 hour class in Seattle, Washington, called "The Painted Page". It will be a rip-roaring fun and fast-paced class from 6–9 p.m. Here's the scoop:Get ready to roll up your sleeves, and spend the evening painting and collaging free-form, folded books. This 'process-oriented' class will open your eyes to many possibilities using various papers, fabrics, texture and acrylic paints. Heavy watercolor paper, gesso and some collage materials will be provided. Small supply list upon registration. No experience required!

This is a favorite piece of mine, called "Autumn Diptych". Many processes went into this piece. I first printed some photos I took, of pond surfaces, onto inkjet poplin fabric. I then bleached them out. I applied some oil pastels to bring 'back' some of the color. Then I fused them onto cradled hardboard with clear encaustic medium, and continued to add tar paper, white encaustic paint, wire and some chicken bones I found in the parking lot. I really pushed myself on this one (to abandon old ideas), and I love the results! The 'process' was the most important part of this piece. I would love to revisit the state of mind I was in while doing this piece...easier said than done, though. (Mmmm...maybe I should call this "Pond Diptych" instead.)
I've just completed--yes, this very minute--this wonderful little encaustic wax and found object shrine for Valentine's Day. It also includes a small book with a window cut into it. This was so much fun to do, and I am hooked on the process. I will be teaching a workshop explaining how to make one of these in Everett, Washington, in mid-June (please see sidebar "My Upcoming Workshops"). I will soon be putting this up for sale in my online Etsy shop. This will be a tough one to part with!
