New encaustic painting

This intriguing encaustic painting uses scribed (carved) lines and texture to evoke something very ancient, with a sense of 'history'. The inspiration I had for this piece was a set of three carved bone beads. It's done on cradled birch board, so there is no need for framing! Encaustic art is very durable, and archival.

I am fascinated by decay...

Just outside my front door...I feel a painting coming on.

Hands at work...

There's nothing more beautiful (other than the happy faces of my kids) than creative hands at work. Here are a few photos taken during my workshop from last Saturday's, "Clipboard Shrine-ology".  I had wonderful students, who weren't afraid to try anything!

A big  "thank you" to Lori and Teresa for letting me photograph their projects in-the-works. We had a wonderful time!

"The Vancouver Problem"... article about the state of the arts in the Pacific Northwest

Vancouver B.C water taxi, originally uploaded by jomoma58.

(I love Vancouver!) Read this recent article from "The Stranger" and come back and tell me what you think about the art scene in Seattle, Vancouver B.C., the U.S. in general. I tend to agree with the article. I have to thank my daughter (who will be attending art school in Vancouver in the fall) for sending me this one. Good job!

Rumi and art from the vaults....

I just can't get enough of the writings of Rumi...so here's a favorite of mine, paired with one of my pastel paintings called "Afternoon Meadow"... Enjoy.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there...

When the soul lies down in that grass
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
doesn't make any sense.

The birth of a shrine...

This is another clipboard shrine in the works. These shrine/assemblage pieces are like jigsaw puzzles...I just have to be patient with the process of trial and error (i.e. fitting the right pieces together). I did the base and niche (made from an old book) last January, and I'm just getting around to placing objects on the shrine. I found the porcelain figure piece at ArtFest vendor night 3 months later, so one HAS to be patient with the process. It's a good idea to have more than one of these going at the same time...if an object doesn't work on one shrine, then it may work on another. Now, how to attach...

Susan Boyle's "Cry Me a River" has me doing just that.

Just when I thought I had been "wowed" enough to last a decade, a recording of Susan Boyle singing "Cry Me a River" just turned up.  Have the hankies ready...truly unbelievable.

Now THIS is talent!

Susan Boyle's amazing performance on "Britains Got Talent"...just reinforces what I'm always telling my kids (usually met with a response of much rolling of the eyes): "NEVER GIVE UP!!"

The lyrics are so moving (from Les Miserables) And, even though the song has a sad tone, it is truly uplifting:

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high,
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
When dreams were made and used,
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung,
No wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame.

And still I dream he'll come to me
And we will live our lives together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather...

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seems
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.

It's not too late to sign up for my workshop "Clipboard Shrine-ology"!

ArtFest Slideshow

Back from ArtFest 2009

I just returned last weekend from ArtFest, a wonderful art retreat held in Port Townsend, Washington. As usual (it's my 5th year attending), I was filled with the 'creative' spirit, made new art friends and reconnected with old ones.  See more of my photos at my Flickr site

I am sending a HUGE thank you to Teesha and Tracy Moore and 'company' (the wonderful volunteers) for a fantastic ArtFest experience. My instructors were ALL fabulous: Michael deMeng, Sas Colby and LK Ludwig (Lori, I hope your wrist has mended!!). I learned so much...

Definitely a tough concept at ArtFest...slow down!

Really getting into my artwork 'zone'...

A few pieces that I did during LK Ludwig's Metal Mesh class.
