My shrine has arrived!!

This beautiful shrine,"Art Heals", has just arrived on my doorstep! It was made by artist Lisa DiNunzio, and you can see her blog at: www.pritistudio.blogspot.com. Lisa was one of many talented artists who participated in the auction to benefit Oaxaca Street Children Grassroots, which raised approximately $4,000 this year. I was also very privileged to be involved in the auction, by making and donating a handmade shrine called "Protect the Children". (see my sidebar)

Here is a little bit about Lisa DiNunzio:
"I am a self-taught (self-critical) artist.  I was brought up by the
"waste not-want not" mantra, so this explains the up-cycled art
I create and also probably my extra 10 pounds :)
I am a paradox: eternally optimistic and at the same time
almost always melancholy.

I have a family that I am in love with...a charmed life I am so thankful for... I am bashful and ridden with anxiety, but I do have a "brave-face-mask" that I wear almost all of the time..."

I feel so fortunate to have met all of the artists (through our blogs) who participated in this heartfelt cause for children in Oaxaca, Mexico. I encourage you to visit Lisa's beautiful art blog!

I will demonstrate how to make a shrine tomorrow!

The 'beginnings' of a shrine...

Saturday, December 12, I will be doing a demonstration on how I combine encaustic and assemblage to make a contemporary shrine. The shrine I have started, pictured above, will be offered online during an auction to benefit the street children of Oaxaca, Mexico. The demo will be part of the monthly Artists Connect meeting, held in Edmonds, Washington, at the ArtWorks building at the corner of Dayton and 2nd. The meeting starts at 10:oo a.m., and is for artists that live/work in or near the Edmonds and 'north of Seattle' area. I am very excited to be starting a piece of artwork that will benefit children who are in need. To read more about this cause, please visit:

This contemporary shrine will go through many phases before being complete. The online auction, featuring the artwork of many talented artists across the U.S., will be taking place in March of 2010, so please visit this blog for updates!

Candy Tin Assemblage class was fabulous fun...

Some of my students' work from my Candy Tin Assemblage class that took place last night. These photos show various stages of progress throughout the evening. My students were mostly teachers (middle and high school), and artists. I felt like I was in very good company. Teaching this class was a very rewarding experience!

Doodads and rusty stuff for my kid...

My Favorite Things, originally uploaded by jomoma58.

My daughter, who is attending her first year of art school in Vancouver B.C., called me the other day requesting some interesting things. Rusty stuff and found objects...ahhh, I have trained her well. I guess they don't have much of that stuff in downtown Vancouver. She is in great need of these items for her first science (really!?) project. The assignment? Create a "Cabinet of Curiosity" (in box form) of natural objects–basically, an assemblage piece. Joseph Cornell was one of the first artists to actually do this in box form. Check it out–they are fabulous!

http://www.josephcornellbox.com/

I am feeling fairly excited to put together a "care" package of rusty things for my daughter, and so glad her love of using mixed media and found objects has stayed with her. I can't wait to see the finished product!

Artwork featured in Cloth•Paper•Scissors

A recent mixed media piece of mine, called "To the Sea", is now featured in the current July/August issue of Cloth•Paper•Scissors. It appears in an article called "Life's a Beach" (page 76), which was a challenge to readers to create art based on this theme. I am really pleased with the way my artwork is presented (page 80), so that the tiniest of subtle details can be seen. It's one of my clipboard assemblage pieces, and celebrates the memories of many wonderful beach walks with loved ones. Most major bookstores carry this magazine. Check it out!

The birth of a shrine...

This is another clipboard shrine in the works. These shrine/assemblage pieces are like jigsaw puzzles...I just have to be patient with the process of trial and error (i.e. fitting the right pieces together). I did the base and niche (made from an old book) last January, and I'm just getting around to placing objects on the shrine. I found the porcelain figure piece at ArtFest vendor night 3 months later, so one HAS to be patient with the process. It's a good idea to have more than one of these going at the same time...if an object doesn't work on one shrine, then it may work on another. Now, how to attach...

Thanks for voting!

I wanted to thank all of you for your help in my decision on what artworks to submit to Lark Books call for art for their upcoming publication: "500 Found Object Works". My finalists were: Margarita and Marigolds, 33000 Words and Countdown to Nada. These can be seen on my flickr site. Or, in my web gallery, ArtID.com. It was a tough choice, as they only allowed three submissions. Your words of encouragement were wonderful...
